A solid start

To feel the full benefit of the Mat Work, we strongly recommend 1-1 sessions in our Apparatus studios before embarking on a group mat practice. Pilates should ideally always start on the Joe Pilates’ Universal Reformer, where your alignment can be assessed, your Power House strengthened and where the springs can support your workout. This will enhance your Mat Practice and enable you (and us!) to understand what your body needs.

Classical Mat

Level 1...

… is for beginners with no movement limitations or injury who are new to Classical Pilates. We begin with the Basic or foundational repertoire in order to start to build your Power House. Ideally you will have working in the studio on the apparatus, which will have made your transition to the Matwork more straightforward.

Level 2...

… you are working towards all the Intermediate repertoire from a solid foundational basis. You may need the odd reminder about how an exercise goes, but you're fine once you remember which is which. This will be a faster paced, flowing class and you will understand which exercises are suitable for your body and how to modify others appropriately for your current goals.

Level 3...

… the full Monty! Here we will work with the full 34 exercises of Joe Pilates’ original mat series, plus Advanced additions. You are as confident upside-down as you are the right way up, know the transitions from one exercise to the next and can move continuously and mindfully through a fast paced and super challenging workout. Your Roll Up, Rollover and Teaser now combine to become the Boomerang as we test our skills in every conceivable direction.

Level A...

… is where we start you off on your journey into classical Pilates. Suitable for beginners to the work, who are cleared to exercise by their health professional but who may be recovering from injury or illness. We’ll work on maximising your comfortable range of movement, learning how to modify appropriately for your needs. Ideally you will have been working in the studio on the apparatus, which will make your transition to the Matwork more straightforward.

Level B...

… is where we get creative around the basic Classical Mat to meet your individual needs. You know your regular workout well including some of your own particular modifications. We'll work through tailored floor, seated chair and standing exercises, making sure your your joints are always well supported.

Level C...

… is a lightly modified class based firmly on sections of the Intermediate Classical Mat series. You are able to lie front, back and side, to kneel and to sit on the floor with reasonable ease. You may keep your head and chest supported on the floor for your Hundred and Abdominal Series of Five, but we will work strongly and with flow throughout the class. This level approaches a version of the traditional Mat series whilst observing the guidelines for those with reduced bone density or osteo-arthritis.
